University of Western Australia: 100,000 books for sale at annual charity event | India Education | Latest Education News | World Education News

Avid readers and collectors will be able to choose from around 100,000 books at the annual Save the Children Book Sale, which kicks off next week at the University of Western Australia.

The event, which raises money for children’s charities in WA and overseas, has been running for 59 years and will once again be held in the historic Undercroft at Winthrop Hall.

Sonia Holmes, community fundraising manager for Save the Children WA, said 60 volunteers worked throughout the year to sort through donations of books, records and games for the winter sales. Another 150 volunteers help during the sale, which takes place over six days.

Shirley Withers, 94, has been volunteering for nearly 25 years helping sort goods at Book House’s donation headquarters and working the Australiana stand during the sale.

“You get addicted to books,” Ms Withers said.

“There is the joy of working with people who share the same interests and the satisfaction of helping for a good cause.”

She said that one year a large number of new books were donated after they were removed from the school system for being considered “inappropriate”.

Ms Withers said they were bought by buyers for $10 and she later discovered they were collectibles and were being sold for hundreds of dollars.

The books will be organized into 62 categories this year with a separate section for music.

“There really is something for everyone in our sales with thousands of books in a huge number of categories, from war history and true crime to vintage collectibles and architecture,” said said Ms. Holmes.

Other categories include small books, gardening, graphic novels, hardcover fiction, and politics.

The sale begins Friday, August 19 at 3 p.m. and ends Wednesday, August 24 at 3 p.m.
