Shoen’s three-home run game was one of the Marauders’ records | Baseball

However, Tuesday’s performance on a cold, windy day in Sioux Falls, SD was one for the record books.

The University of Mary first baseman hit three home runs and drove in seven runs to set school records in both categories. Unfortunately, it was another close loss for the Marauders.

“Yeah, that’s the only downside. You absolutely want to get the win,” Shoen said. “That would have made things much better.”

Against Northern Sun power Augustana, Shoen scored all three pitches – a two-point shot from left; another two-hit blast to the right before a three-hit bomb over the 395-foot center field fence.

Right off the bat, Shoen didn’t think either of them were gone, although the center shot was the best off the bat.

“The first one was a foul, but then a crosswind just sent him back. Honestly, the second one was a defensive swing and he went right,” he said. “The third one, I knew that pitcher We grew up in the same neighborhood. I had a good feeling about that one, but wasn’t sure.

The three home runs came on different pitches – curveball, fastball and slider – on a less than ideal day for hitting with temperatures in the low 40s and constant 15 mph winds.

“It wasn’t a fun day to hit,” Shoen said. “Coming in, you certainly don’t expect that to happen.”

Shoen has a lot of power.

In his two seasons with the Marauders, he has 17 homers, including 11 last spring during his All-NSIC campaign. This year, the Truman, Minn., product hits .303 with six home runs and 28 RBIs. Cal James, who hits 3 holes for the Marauders just ahead of Shoen, leads the team in nearly everything, including batting average (.400), RBIs (34) and runs (29). He also has five home runs for the Marauders, who play for the first time at home today against Winona State at 1:30 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at the Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. Sunday’s game will be played at the Mandan Memorial Ballpark at noon.

In 22 games, all on the road, the Marauders are 9-13 overall and 1-6 in NSIC, but their record is deceiving. Of their six conference losses, five are by one run, four of which are retirements. The other loss was by two points.

“It’s frustrating because in most of those games we had leads and we felt like we were going to win the game, we just weren’t able to wrap it up,” Shoen said. “We still feel like a very good team. I don’t think we need to press the panic button just yet. Hopefully by playing at home things will change for us.

Few players on the Marauders roster have more bats in Bismarck than Shoen. Last summer he played for the Larks in the Northwoods League. This summer he will play for Mankato MoonDogs, another NWL club much closer to home.

Shoen has one more year of eligibility with the Marauders and will graduate in business administration and sports recreation management next spring.

However, the focus is now on returning to the composition of the NSIC. With 13 consecutive games at home, it is possible.

“We had to learn to like the bus. We have been road warriors. It’s like we’re gone forever,” Shoen said. “It will be nice to be home for a while. Hopefully we can enjoy it and at least we can’t get fired. »
