Record books placed on the peaks of Montokuc and Veliki Planjak

September 12, 2022 – Registration books have been placed on the peaks of Montokuc and Veliki Planjak in the beautiful Mljet National Park in Dalmatia, with more to come.

As Morsky written, the island hike logbooks have now been placed on the peaks of Montokuc and Veliki Planjak, with the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) and Mljet National Park rangers having placed boxes containing the logbooks aforementioned recording for hikers on the most visited peaks in Mljet National Park. They will also soon be installed on the highest peak of the island, the Veliki grad, 514 meters high.

The cooperation with the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service in Mljet has been going on for many years now, and it was formalized by a joint European Union (EU) project, the aim of which was to improve the infrastructure of visitors and visitor safety from their partner, NP Mljet, as well as the Tourist Board of Mljet and Desa, by which the Croatian mountain rescue branch was equipped. The premises for the branch were provided by the Municipality of Mljet itself.

There are more than 200 kilometers of hiking and mountaineering trails in Mljet National Park, and in recent years the season when foreign visitors start descending on the island has started as early as March and continued until the end of October. Outside of the main summer months, most visitors are active nature lovers on the greenest and one of the hilliest islands in Croatia.

The tasks of the Croatian mountain rescue teams in Mljet are furthermore governed by the contract between JU NP Mljet and HGSS, and they last from the beginning of June to the end of September each year.

This year’s on-call activities at Mljet National Park will end on October 8 with the Mljet Trail race. The race will connect the most attractive paths and viewpoints of the national park in three categories (6 km, 13 km and 23 km), with elevation differences of 197 m, 527 m and 841 m.

Participant registration for the Mljet Trail is now open, and you can find out more about the race by click here.
