New report on global e-book sales

A new report from Austrian publishing consultant Ruediger Wischenbart has analyzed recent trends in e-book sales in markets including Brazil, Italy, Spain, German-speaking countries and Latin America.

The data in the Digital consumer book barometer The report shows an increase in the availability and use of streaming and subscription services, as well as increased use of libraries to access e-books and audiobooks, in most of the markets surveyed. Publishers’ improved digital marketing, which targets specific customers, has proven to be one of the reasons for the increase in sales.

Across all markets, there was a peak in audiobook sales and subscriptions in 2020 before a slight decline in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Sales and subscription levels remain significantly higher than in the pre -pandemic.

Wischenbart noted that interest in digital books has moved beyond traditionally popular categories, such as romance and mysteries. “Children’s books and young adult books have found new audiences,” Wischenbart said. “As did other genre categories, such as certain types of non-fiction, such as self-help, self-improvement, spirituality.”
