DVLA publishes new waiting times for driving licenses and logbooks

The DVLA has revealed the latest average wait times for motorists to receive new logbooks or driving licenses.

The pandemic and industry action have resulted in significantly longer wait times for DVLA documents if you used a paper application form.

There is no delay with online applications.

Although wait times are likely to be long, there are certain circumstances in which you can still drive while your application is being processed, MEN reports.

Delays may also be greater for complex requests such as those requiring a medical investigation as part of the license.

Updated processing dates for paper applications

The following dates apply to what the DVLA claims to be currently working on for different types of paper applications:

  • Renew a driver’s license with a new photo – October 26, 2021
  • Apply for a first provisional driving license with UK identity – 28 October 2021

  • Renewing a driver’s license if you are 70 or older or after disqualification or revocation – October 26, 2021

  • Apply for a first professional driving license – January 13, 2022

  • Renewing a professional driving license – January 12, 2022

  • Apply for a driving license with a non-UK identity – 26 October 2021

  • Request or renew a tachograph card – 12 January 2022

  • Request to change name or address on your driver’s license – October 27, 2021

  • Notify DVLA of vehicle sale -January 10, 2022

  • Changes to the Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) – December 31, 2021

  • Request a replacement V5C logbook – December 21, 2021

  • Registering a vehicle for the first time (including used and imported vehicles) – January 6, 2022

  • Keeping or assigning a vehicle registration number – January 7, 2022

It is important to note that if you do not receive your vehicle documents within six weeks of making a request, you will need to contact the DVLA.
