On Revolution in Our Time: The Black Panther Party’s Promise to the People
With passion and precision, Kekla Magoon relays an essential story of the Black Panthers, as revolutionary activists and human rights defenders working for the defense and protection of their community.
In this comprehensive, inspiring and far too relevant story of the Black Panther Party, Kekla Magoon introduces readers to the Panthers community activism, grounded in the concept of self-defense, which taught black Americans how to protect and support themselves in a country. who treated them like second-class citizens. For too long, the story of the Panthers has been a footnote to the civil rights movement rather than what it was: a revolutionary socialist movement that attracted thousands of members – mostly women – and became the target of one of the most sustained law enforcement efforts of all time. made by the US government against its own citizens.
Revolution in Our Time places the Panthers in the proper context of black American history, from the first arrival of slaves to today’s Black Lives Matter movement. Kekla Magoon’s groundbreaking work invites a new generation of readers struggling with injustices in the United States to learn from the history and courage of the Panthers, inspiring them to take their place in the ongoing struggle for justice.
This comprehensive and meticulously researched volume helps readers understand the Panthers in the spectrum of black resistance. The narrative is cinematic in its descriptions of the personalities and incidents that make up the history of the party while presenting a common thread to today’s anti-racist activism. The book’s eye-catching graphic design, with profuse use of robin’s egg blue contrasted with dramatic black-and-white photographs, and with memorable quotes scattered throughout, makes it visually pleasing. Highly readable, must-see story of America’s history and current reality. –Kirkus Reviews (star review)
Kekla Magoon is a national treasure, and Revolution in Our Time passionately and thoroughly details a critical truth that is both feared and needed in the classroom. –Rita Williams-Garcia, award-winning author of A Sitting in St. James
